Hi! My name is Karen Luchterhand. . I have been teaching at Evergreen Academy fulltime since 2015. However… Back in the day….

I was born in Detroit, MI and grew up as the oldest daughter of a college/seminary professor in Ft. Wayne, IN. I graduated from Ball State University with a degree in K-8 Elementary Education and Special Education (physically handicapped).  I taught Pre-K/Kindergarten for several years while my husband finished his master’s degreeWe then moved to Wisconsin and started our family. Karl and I have been blessed with 5 children, 2 daughters by marriage, 1 grandson (2 2/12 and a granddaughter who was born near Christmas 2016. Our children went to traditional school until our oldest was in 7th grade. We then transitioned to being a homeschooling family. We homeschooled for 15 years until our youngest graduated from high school.  During that time I did caregiving, tutoring and part-time substitute teaching.

Although I have taught all the grades Pre-K to 12th grade and virtually every subject, I am looking forward to teaching Middle School English/Language Arts.  I believe that every child is a unique learner!  I teach in a variety of ways so that each child can learn in the way that best suits him or her but is also challenged to grow in learning in ways that are not always as easy.  I am a bookaholic and am excited to share that love with my students.

Parents are an important influence on a child! I think it is the job of the parents and the teacher to encourage a child to see learning as a positive and ongoing part of life. Learning is not just academics however. Learning also includes character development, physical skills, and people interaction. These are things we will be learning and practicing in our classroom. I am excited to have the next nine months to learn and grow together.
