My name is Kristina Geniesse, and I am returning to EverGreen Academy in the 2017-2018 school year to teach Middle School Humanities. I share the school’s Mission and Vision—that each child be known, valued, challenged, nurtured, and look forward to coming to school each day. It is my goal to meet each individual student at his/her respective skill level, highlight and build upon personal strengths, identify areas of need, set realistic goals together, and empower students to fulfill their potential. Using the Love & Logic approach to teaching, I enjoy fostering mentor relationships with students, giving them opportunities to build problem-solving and other life skills, and providing encouragement to improve their self-concept. I also compare the curriculum to current events to help students better relate and stimulate critical thinking.
Prior to teaching at EverGreen, I gained six years of valuable experience in the Social Services field. Most recently, I coordinated supportive services for youth diagnosed with mental health and emotional-behavioral disabilities. I credit my work with families across settings—in school, at home, and in the community—for giving me perspective to use a more holistic teaching approach. I value open communication and encourage family involvement to further support student success. I have also worked with youth involved in the Juvenile Justice System in Racine and Kenosha counties and facilitated groups using an integrative model to increase accountability, develop pro-social relationships and improve decision-making skills. Whenever possible, I incorporate the education of these character-building skills in the classroom, as well.
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Parkside with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Certificate in Applied Mental Health Skills. While there, I was part of a research team and Vice President of UWP’s chapter of Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology. I was raised in Kenosha and am grateful to be able to visit my loving parents, two younger sisters, and baby niece often. My hobbies include traveling, bird-watching, art photography, and walking the shores of Lake Michigan.
I look forward to seeing all of the familiar faces again and meeting those of you who are new to EverGreen. Let’s have a great year!
