Hello! My name is Kathy Fry, and I am the new Music Teacher at EverGreen Academy Middle School. My education includes years of studying music (a never-ending endeavor!) and have a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from the University of Maryland.

I grew up in northeast Ohio. My parents were both very musical- my father played saxophone and clarinet, my mother sang and played piano, my aunt sang, and played both piano and organ. They introduced me to diverse genres of music- classical, jazz, pop, Broadway, and many more. After Sunday dinner, we would gather around my aunt’s organ for a fun family singalong. My high school had an excellent music department, and I spent those years singing in our choir as well as in our church choir. My passion for music flourished.

By the age of eighteen, I began playing music professionally. I play piano and guitar and I sing. I perform as a soloist; I have a jazz trio, and I play in a Dueling Pianos group. My career as a professional musician has taken me all over the world. I have performed in countless diverse venues including concerts such as Wisconsin’s own Summerfest and The Isthmus Jazz Festival, elegant 5-star hotels, and cruise ships. I recorded two CDs and performed vocals commercial jingles.

After my world travels, I was offered a gig as Resident Pianist at The Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva where I played for 25 years.

During that time, I taught private piano, guitar and voice lessons and found my second passion: Teaching. I started substitute teaching in various districts and landed at Starbuck Middle School last year as a Building Sub. While challenging, I love teaching middle school students. For me, teaching is the culmination of my lengthy career in music.

I hope to build wonderful relationships with my new students and parents, and, of course, with the entire staff at EverGreen. Music gives us so many gifts- it gives us the freedom to explore our creative selves in uniquely individual ways. It gives us the means to express our emotions and listening to music gives us the outlet for coping, for creating memories or just plain joy as a backdrop for any life event from cleaning your house, to your first kiss, for birthday and anniversary celebrations, and absolutely anything!! I hope I can open the creative doors for my students to instill a lifelong love of music.
